Wuhan Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, was founded in 1958 and officially changed to Wuhan Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences on April 23, 1985.

By the end of 2021, there were 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and more than 20 national high-level talents such as winners of the National Outstanding Youth Fund. According to the official website data of the Institute in October 2023, the Wuhan Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has three scientific research platforms, seven research, development and support platforms and five industrialization platforms. There is one first-level discipline, one second-level discipline doctoral and master's training point, 1 professional master's degree training center, and has a first-level discipline postdoctoral mobile station; it recruits more than 1600 graduate students, graduates more than 1000 people, and has 282 graduate students (175 doctoral students).
